The Technologists, a New Novel

by Matthew Pearl

Better than The Poe Shadow, but not as good as The Last Dickens or The Dante Club, this is still a better than the average read coming out of the “bigs” these days. If you like historical thrillers, this might be right up your alley. The research is impeccable. –D. L. Keur, The Deepening World of Books

The first class at M.I.T. The last hope for a city in peril.

The acclaimed author of The Dante Club reinvigorates the historical thriller. Matthew Pearl’s spellbinding new novel transports readers to tumultuous nineteenth-century Boston, where the word “technology” represents a bold and frightening new concept. The fight for the future will hinge on . . .

THE TECHNOLOGISTS

Boston, 1868. The Civil War may be over but a new war has begun, one between the past and the present, tradition and technology. On a former marshy wasteland, the daring Massachusetts Institute of Technology is rising, its mission to harness science for the benefit of all and to open the doors of opportunity to everyone of merit. But in Boston Harbor a fiery cataclysm throws commerce into chaos, as ships’ instruments spin inexplicably out of control. Soon after, another mysterious catastrophe devastates the heart of the city. Is it sabotage by scientific means or Nature revolting against man’s attempt to control it?

The shocking disasters cast a pall over M.I.T. and provoke assaults from all sides—rival Harvard, labor unions, and a sensationalistic press. With their first graduation and the very survival of their groundbreaking college now in doubt, a band of the Institute’s best and brightest students secretly come together to save innocent lives and track down the truth, armed with ingenuity and their unique scientific training.

Led by “charity scholar” Marcus Mansfield, a quiet Civil War veteran and one-time machinist struggling to find his footing in rarefied Boston society, the group is rounded out by irrepressible Robert Richards, the bluest of Beacon Hill bluebloods; Edwin Hoyt, class genius; and brilliant freshman Ellen Swallow, the Institute’s lone, ostracized female student. Working against their small secret society, from within and without, are the arrayed forces of a stratified culture determined to resist change at all costs and a dark mastermind bent on the utter destruction of the city.

Studded with suspense and soaked in the rich historical atmosphere for which its author is renowned, The Technologists is a dazzling journey into a dangerous world not so very far from our own, as the America we know today begins to shimmer into being.

The Little Russian spotlights an exciting new voice in historical fiction, an assured debut that should appeal to readers of Away by Amy Bloom or Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. The novel tells the story of Berta Alshonsky, who revels in childhood memories of her time spent with a wealthy family in Moscow –a life filled with salons, balls and all the trappings of the upper class — very different from her current life as a grocer’s daughter in the Jewish townlet of Mosny. So when a mysterious and cultured wheat merchant walks into the grocery, Berta’s life is forever altered. She falls in love, unaware that he is a member of the Bund, The Jewish Worker’s League, smuggling arms to the shtetls to defend them against the pogroms sweeping the Little Russian countryside.

Married and established in the wheat center of Cherkast, Berta has recaptured the life she once had in Moscow. So when a smuggling operation goes awry and her husband must flee the country, Berta makes the vain and foolish choice to stay behind with her children and her finery. As Russia plunges into war, Berta eventually loses everything and must find a new way to sustain the lives and safety of her children. Filled with heart-stopping action, richly drawn characters, and a world seeped in war and violence; The Little Russian is poised to capture readers as one of the hand-selling gems of the season.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I started out as a ceramic artist, working in clay, doing narrative pieces that told a story. I was quite successful in a small way, showing my work in different cities, teaching, running the art gallery at Whittier College and eventually becoming an assistant professor of art and, for one year, the chair of the department. Then one day I had a life changing revelation: It’s easier to tell stories with words. Wow! No more mud; just a computer and Word. No more lugging hundreds of pounds of clay around and staying up until dawn watching the kilns. Since then I have been a struggling would-be author, a successful T.V. writer/producer (co-created That’s So Raven for Disney) and finally the author of The Little Russian.”

The Arrangement: Resistance, Book 1, New Novel

Excerpts prove the book is well-written, but that comes with a warning for those with delicate sensibilities. This is “hot, sexy romance” wrapped inside a historical resistance story set in Poland during the time of Hitler. –D. L. Keur, The Deepening World of Books

Elsa Mostek is a young Jewish woman who is forced to move with her family from the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland to the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943. She immediately draws the attention of Nazi Officer Friedrich Weiss who inexplicably shows favor towards her and helps her escape harm many times thanks to the power he wields in the camp. Aware that many of her fellow female prisoners are bartering their bodies for survival and in desperation to save her starving family, Elsa makes an offer to Friedrich.

What Elsa does not know is that Friedrich is a spy with the German Resistance that has infiltrated the Nazi regime. He must keep up the pretense of loyalty to Hitler’s cause as he sends secrets to those on the outside.

Friedrich doesn’t want to take advantage of Elsa but can’t help wanting her. As the misery of his position increases, she offers him the only light left in a world of darkness and despite his best intentions, Friedrich gives in to her offer. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

E. Jamie is the pseudonym of Nancy Da Silva who lives in Toronto, Canada. She has been writing since the age of eleven and hasn’t been bored a day in her life since.

She writes non fiction under her real name but thought it best to use another name for her erotica so folks looking for her work didn’t get a mishmash of different genres and styles. If erotica’s not your thing and you’re looking for maybe straight romance or some of her non fiction work, you’re better off not looking under ‘E. Jamie’.

E. Jamie stands for hot. Hot sexy stories that make your toes and everything else curl. It stands for passionate tales that leave the bedroom door wide open and leave you begging for more.

Nancy is a fulltime freelance writer and will be publishing some of her tamer (still sexy, still hot but not that kind of hot) romances under her real name or some edited version of her name very soon.

She decided to take the plunge into writing erotica for publication (after writing it for free for more years than she should have been. Naughty girl) and was snapped up by Amira Press first and now Sugar and Spice Press as well.

In her free time she likes to read and counts Paullina Simons, Diana Gabaldon, Julia Quinn, Victoria Alexander, Catherine Anderson and Lisa Kleypas among her favorite authors. She loves to listen to music while she writes and suggests movies soundtracks are some of the best music to write to. She is in love with the TV show Supernatural and thinks Jensen Ackles was born simply to inspire her to write smut. As she is a Days Of Our Lives fan, she believes James Scott falls into this category as well.

She loves to cook as she considers it yet another wonderful creative outlet though much to her chagrin she cannot make soup.
